Plant Scientist, Oxford

Hello, I'm Vinay!

I am a plant scientist, and I am fascinated by the interplay of external and internal factors that define plant growth and development.
Currently, I am a postdoctoral fellow at the department of biology, Oxford. I am working on diverse aspects of root development and oxygen signalling.

My journey in science…

I initially approached plant science in 2012 as a research associate at an industrial research and development centre at Mahyco seeds ltd. (India), where I worked on wheat and rice transformation to generate new stress-tolerant varieties. This experience allowed me to develop technical skills but also made me realise my passion for fundamental research.
To that pursuit, I moved to Pisa, Italy, to work on a doctoral project focused on investigating the impact of oxygen availability on root architecture. My work pioneered the study of oxygen gradients and reduced oxygen availability (hypoxia) as a cue that contributes to regulate developmental patterns in plants.
During my doctoral research, I became particularly intrigued by various aspects of root development and to satisfy this curiosity, I joined the group of Prof. Marie Barberon in Geneva (CH) as a postdoc. Here, I studied a biological process which was entirely new to me: how suberin deposition is regulated at the molecular level in roots. This work demonstrated that development and plasticity of suberin barrier for selective mineral nutrient uptake in the root endodermis is tightly regulated by exogenous and developmental cues.
